Diseases of Attitude

This article was inspired by the great entrepreneur, the late Jim Rohn, who spent over 40 years of his life helping people around the world sculpt life strategies in search for success.

Did you know that there is a war between good and evil? That’s life. We have both in this world. What’s the opposite of democracy? Tyranny, right? We need both to be able to compare and choose how to lead our lives.

So, negative is normal and part of everyone’s experience. We can’t ignore it. We need to find ways to handle it. Here we are going to explore certain types of attitudes that could be detrimental to us and will discuss how to overcome them.

The first attitude is Neglect. A week of neglect can cause someone or an organization a year of repair. Is it worth it? Why do we avoid things we know we should be doing? Look at your real estate business for example. Can you afford not to market to sellers? Absolutely not!

The next attitude is Indifference. So many people live their lives lukewarm with no passion. Get worked up! Pick one direction or one thing you want to do and put everything you got into it.

The next best thing to prosperity is adversity. If you don’t have one, pray for the other. Inspiration or desperation, whatever it takes to try harder and reach for your goals. That’s the key to life.

Learning to put everything we got into everything we do. Don’t have the delusion that if you had a better job, you would be happier. It’s not fair to yourself or your employer. Put 100% in the current job you are doing so you can improve your current circumstance or better yet, find another one.

This brings us to the next attitude of Indecision or mental paralysis. A life full of adventure is a life full of decisions. The ones that will turn out to be wrong give you an opportunity to make better decisions in the future. Most people look for ways to avoid making decisions when in fact they should be doing the opposite. That’s where adventure is.

Decide to go to appointments and talk to sellers. It may be scary at first, there is a possibility that you might get rejected, but it’s also very exciting. You might just get a deal.

The next attitude many people have is Doubt. Self-doubt is the worst. There are doubts if you will do well, if you can accomplish that much, if you are smart enough, if you will say the right things to a seller, if you have what you need, and the list goes on and on…. Become a believer! Believe in yourself. Know your self-worth and soon you will see how the outcome will change your life.

The next disease of attitude is Worry. This causes health problems, social problems, family problems, and devastation. Worry long enough and you are dead before your time. Give it up! It can be as easy as making that decision.

Next is Overcaution. Some people will never have much in life because they are too cautious. They are afraid to take risk. “What if that happens?” “What if I say the wrong things?” “What if I get rejected?” All the “what ifs” are what Jim Rohn called as the Language of the Poor.

The truth is, it’s all risky. Investing is risky, getting married is risky, having kids is risky, getting on a plane is risky, getting out of your house is risky, starting your own business is risky, real estate is risky. Everything is risky. Life is all about risks.

Don’t aim for safety and security. Search for adventure! I would rather live 30 years full of adventure than 100 years in safety and security.

Next is Pessimism. The deadly disease of always looking on the bad side of everything you do and always coming up with reasons why something will go wrong. It is about not trying to figure out what’s right, but trying to figure out what’s wrong. To the pessimist, the glass is always half empty, to the optimist the glass is always half full.

It all depends on the way we look at things, not the way they are. We have a choice and it all starts with better thinking habits. Most people work hard, but they don’t think hard. Look at what you put in your mind. What do you read? Watch? Choose to put your focus on? It is simple to build a good life. It all begins with choosing the right materials to take in and not the wrong ones. Do not let anyone make that decision for you. Instead, YOU decide for yourself.

This leads us to the last and deadliest disease of all, Complaining. So many people spend their days whining, crying, groaning and complaining about everything that they do. As Jim Rohn said, it’s the “economic cancer of the bone.”

Stop complaining about where you are, your current job, responsibilities, co-workers, relationships, etc. This will not get you to the promise land. Make the conscious choice of putting the habit of complaining to rest and start being grateful about what you have and who you have in your life. This change in focus is a great start in allowing change to take place in your life.

All the points made here are nothing new, quite simple and we all know them. They are good reminders to help make us be aware of what we are doing wrong so we can change them. Who knows? It might just turn your life around. It changed mine.

To your success,
